“Gawd that’s a big snake!”
Even though it was lying on its side, eyes staring at the trees, nostrils oozing sticky yellow goo and dead as dead could be, Tommy’s knees shook as he kicked the monster’s nose.
“That there critter ate your mamma and Uncle Tony and Auntie Sis.”
Tommy spat in the crook of the snake’s half-open mouth.
It groaned.
“Lordy! Boy! You done brought it back to life! Run!”
Tommy tried. He really did. But he felt as if he were running through mud. Getting nowhere fast.
SSSSUUUPPP!
He woke, tangled in bed sheets.

Thanks, James. I couldn’t help but go goofy on this prompt. That rock looks like a big ol snake’s head to me. Thanks for reading and commenting.

Thanks! When I was small I had a recurring nightmare about being chased by a herd of buffalo.I’d climb in bed next to my mom and things would be a whole lot better.

Nicely nightmarish, Alicia. That feeling of being trapped, unable to escape. The worst thing about dreams. Beautifully done

Thanks. That weird feeling of not being able to run in a dream is so odd, isn’t it?

Horrible, isn’t it? Must be something to do with parts of the body that shut off during sleep. How many of us have tried to cry out whilst having a nightmare and yet can’t?

Ah the walking through mud nightmares, don’t we all know them? This turned from horror to fun, Alicia. Great writing.

Surreal and a whole lot of fun, Alicia! I had some eerie dreams myself in the past. Even some days ago. No more pizza before bedtime! 😀

I’ve had plenty of snake dreams. They always terrify me, even rubber snakes. I’m glad I read this at 6am instead of midnight.

Thanks, Rochelle! I had a hard time with this one and wasn’t going to write anything (plus the fact I’m spending the weekend up in Vancouver, B.C. with a friend at Bard on the Beach https://bardonthebeach.org and wasn’t sure I’d have time to comment on other FF stories. Don’t like to submit if I don’t have time to read.) But this was fun to write. Always, always appreciate your comments.
